Unit 2 - Senses
For the second unit we have two projects, but for this post I am showing my ideas for the first project 'Senses' (a live brief from Fujifilm). I have no idea where I am going with this one as I'm not sure what sense/s I want to portray.
So my first thoughts were on texture, text and inks (sight and touch). I recently photographed my first reel, which turned out quite well. I used a Sensia 200 (50mm) so I could project my images, as an interactive outcome where I can incorporate text.
The theme I focused on was 'Temptation' using food as the content.
The first three images were taken at home:
Plums (the temptation of sex, to touch someone):
Chocolate cheesecake (temptation of indulging in food):
Poisoned Apple (temptation of tasting, like Snow White/Adam and Eve):
I loved the poisoned apple idea, so the next day I went to the studio to develop this idea.
I decided to use a model wearing a black coat to make it more mysterious (like Snow White with the witch). Some of these images were under exposed, which was a shame because I loved the compositions. The colouring of the successful images I thought were lovely. To compliment the red/green apple, I chose to use a blue backdrop. Even though the blue backdrop didn't come out very well, I still love the vibrant colouring.

Successful images:
These images were quite interesting with the different exposures.
The contrast I could play about with.. maybe develop into a better idea.
So for my other idea, I decided to look at inks. Mainly focusing at sight, with quotes such as "What can you see?" (sort of like Psychiatrist ink cards). I created my own ink cards, with blotting paper, coloured and black inks.
I photographed open and closed compositions, with both blurred and in focus effects.
They sort of remind me of clouds or blood..
So, shall see where it goes from here..

Unit 1
I got my feedback on Thursday from the first unit, and I got 63% (2:1)
So pretty pleased with myself.
The unit was split into three projects (Digital, Studio and Analogue).
My first project was 'Digital' where I had to create a narrative. I focused on women in society in a fairytale state (creating ghostly, layering effects on Photoshop).
I then had to think of a way to create a narrative, so I decided to draw my attention to Duane Michals. I incorporated a short poem, split the text to then layer on my final images.
Final images (in order):
My second project was 'Studio' where I had to produce four portrait images (including a self-portrait). I first experimented with hands which moved onto John French inspired images.
John French images:
I wanted to move away from the fashion portraiture and go onto a different look, contrasting beauty and commercial with humour and shocking facial expressions.
I still used the hands to make the models distort their faces. My inspiration for this was Bruce Nauman 'Studies for Holograms' (1970)
The hands were becoming too repetitive, and I wanted something different but still distorted the face. One of my models suggested to use cellotape to hold the facial expressions in place.
Similar to Douglas Gordon 'Monster'
I decided to slightly enhance the colours on Photoshop (inspired by Francis Bacon), to give a more dirty and darker feel.
These were to become my final images:
My third and final project was Analogue (B&w), for this we had to choose three words which described our thoughts/feelings/experiences from the beginning of the course. As I have already been at uni for the previous year, I decided to write down all the words which I have experienced since then (it was a very long list).
As I didn't know which words to choose I did a test reel to see if I could get any ideas:
I liked the out of focus close ups and the window shots. I chose the words 'trapped' and 'drained' but still didn't have a third word. To contrast the negativity, I wanted my third word to be positive.
I actually decided to choose balloons as a metaphor for my final word.
I got the idea from when I went shopping with my boyfriend (he wanted to buy a yo-yo), so we went into a toy store in town and thats when I saw the balloons. I bought one white balloon and five black balloons, so I chose the word 'hope' because even though I haven't had the best of starts to university (wanting to give up at some points), there was still a bit of hope for me to pull through and prove to myself that I could achieve something.
'Trapped' (sketchbook):
'Drained' (sketchbook):
'Hope' contact sheet:
'Hope' final image:
My other two final images weren't that successful so I won't show you those. The images above are pages from my sketchbook so you can get a rough idea of the look I was trying to portray.
I will post my Unit 2 ideas and outcomes soon.

24.1.11
Just can't get enough of those sunsets.
These are some from when I went to Colchester this weekend.
I love this journey, I hate how much it costs though.
(Ignore the reflections)
